Analytical Rage-Paintants

Fabian Marcaccio

Splash, Splatter, Whoosh – entering Fabian Marcaccio´s (*1963 in Rosario de Santa Fe, Argentina) recent solo exhibition at Galerie Thomas Schulte (Finissage on 15th of January) in Berlin feels like entering a battlefield in a comic-strip. The artist refers from the classical painting using canvases, frames and typical brush strokes as an element of the artwork. But through exaggerations, fusions of elements and an overflow of colours, he turns his artworks into uncertain and surreal worlds. Is the artist Fabian Marcaccio an obsessed computer game player? Where does all the anger come from? Does he want to turn our reality into fiction? Or rather criticize the impact of the media onto our real world? made a stroll through Berlin with the New York based Argentinian artist to find out about the influences for his mutated paintings.

But first we talked about Marcaccio´s wall drawings of enourmous size, which he realizes in urban spaces or institutions. For example in Daros, Zürich, Marcaccio painted a 100m long wall in 2005 and for the Triennale Beaufort in Oostende in 2003 he installed a 300m wall along the beach. As the link to the Berlin wall lies near, we wanted to ask Marcaccio about the effects that walls create and found out how they can be used as a medium of communication.
